“Overlooking and denying what we have is to diminish our blessings and to disrespect their sources.”
~
Kristi Nelson, Wake Up Grateful

Today’s practice is an invitation to shift our perspective by acknowledging sufficiency in our lives. Each day, the inequities of the world are right in front of our eyes. Some people have an abundance of resources, others few. Some are surrounded by love, and others long for deep connection. Some benefit from social and political systems, while others are denied. Today’s practice is an invitation to acknowledge the places in our lives where blessing lives, without denying the real grief or struggle we — and others —  may carry. When we can more fully notice and treasure what is already enriching our lives, it opens us to feeling replete and expands our capacity for true generosity of spirit.

  • Begin by taking a few moments to become present through our daily breathing exercise.
  • Given the unique situation of each individual, we offer two prompts for your consideration. We hope that one will resonate with the circumstances of your life right now and open the door of perspective a bit wider.
    • List 10 ways your life is working right now. Give thanks for these and allow yourself to feel the gift of such abundance.
    • If it feels that very little in your life is working right now, we invite you to try to find one thing that is sufficient. Perhaps it is as simple and profound as being able to breathe, being able to hear or see, having water to drink — things that not everyone is able to experience. Write in some detail about this one gift in your life.
  • How does focusing on sufficiency shift your capacity to navigate the challenges of your individual life as well as the uncertainty of this time we’re in as a global community? If you are fortunate enough to live in abundance, how might the experience of sufficiency inspire you toward action on behalf of those who have much less?

We also invite you to share your reflections below.
