So I’ll go at this koan-like. I’ll expand the “if” as my answer. If I stopped and savoured what is here now. If I appreciated that I have more than I need. If I saw appreciation in others. If gratefulness moved me to action. If I saw abundance more than scarcity. If it spawned more action to help others. 3 Reply Mandy D.1 year agoMandy D.Keep me present and appreciating my life as it is. When I am grateful my expectations are more reasonable, as am I! 4 Reply Hajira 💕 Buser1 year agoHajira 💕 BuserGratefulness would increase happiness by appreciating what we have instead of what we desire (for as Buddhist teach, desire and ignorance are the roots of suffering). Gratefulness brings an immediate wave of 🌸grace🌸 even in the wake of tragedy. 4 Reply Cathie1 year agoCathieUsing the paradigm of gratefulness can shift perspective. 3 Reply Heather1 year agoHeatherToday’s quote reminded me of the mindful techniques we work on with young students about the power of yet. I’m not good at math yet but I’m getting better. Fail is first attempt at learning. 8 Reply Hajira 💕 Buser1 year agoHajira 💕 BuserI like how you use “yet” with children. Makes me think of Dr. Dweck’s _Growth Mindset_ and an article you might enjoy from Edutopia entitled, “The Neuroscience Behind Productive Struggle.” 4 Reply Lauryn1 year agoLaurynHelp me to focus more on the positive aspects of my life. 5 Reply dcdeb1 year agodcdebReorder my conceptions. 3 Reply Don Jones1 year agoDon JonesBe the catalyst for a Divine smile. 5 Reply SK1 year agoSKOpen up a huge space in my heart, in my soul, in my very essence. Moments earlier when I asked a friend sitting next to me if the women in front of us was the boys mother she said yes and not to bother going up to her. I went anyway without hesitation. Both the mother and grandmother were appreciative. I don’t know why my friend said not to go up to them. It was the right thing to do. Maybe because they didn’t speak english well. Even so both said thank you we are grateful I came. That hit me. I didn’t even know them. When I sat down I noticed most people were friends of the father and not many people were going up to the women. I’m glad I did. I think gratitude is a shared response and not something done in isolation. I’m not sure. All I know is I’m glad I went and didn’t just pray for them at home like I wanted to since I didn’t know any of them well. My heart was moved and looking into the eyes of the women touched my soul. What would gratefulness do in the life of one whose days are ruled by injustice, inequality, bullying, and lack of power? How can gratefulness empower? As one who has mostly lived a privileged life, it is usually easy for me to live a life led by gratitude. But I have not been open to the ways that gratitude can empower, or I haven’t tapped in to that. That’s what I will be looking for. I think grateful people are kind, open to others’ life experiences and choices and creative in their problem solving. Gratefulness pushes us to be the better person, to strive to recognize and accept our failings and weaknesses (and those of others) with grace. 8 Reply 1 2 Next » My Private Gratitude Journal Write an entry in your private gratefulness journal Get Started This site is brought to you by A Network for Grateful Living, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
