To be fully engaged. To be all in. To be in the present moment. To accept the Now.

The word “wholehearted” hangs from one of my computer monitors on a stick-um. Years ago at work we had an exercise in which they asked us to choose an adjective that described us and I chose this. I’ve had the great good fortune to always do work I believe in and have thrown myself into those endeavors with my whole heart. I care deeply, I bring positive energy that spreads to others, I connect new things I learn to the ongoing efforts so I’m always growing and deepening my understanding. Work takes up so much of our time that I feel fortunate to be able to live life fully in every hour, not only in the time after work. I also feel fortunate that on my weekends and in the evenings I can pay attention to whatever is in those moments and care just as deeply. We’re heading into very hot weather for the Pacific Northwest–up to 95 tomorrow. Today I’ll plant the red onion sets and water everything before it gets hot, checking on the native plants I set out in various parts of the yard two days ago to see how they’re settling in. Red columbine, camas, yarrow, Douglas aster–future blooms for our pollinator friends. Have a super satisfying Saturday, all!

What does it mean to live life wholeheartedly it means trying to put a fence around the garden too prevent the elephants from coming and trample all the cultivated creepers growing. There is watering seeds of devotion, I pray and pour my love into it protect so it will continue to grow as I mature

The visual that came to my mind was a dance. Being totally absorbed in the music that it flows into a movement that over takes the moment.

The first word that came to my mind was embrace. I decide to look up living wholeheartedly on the computer and this is the first and only thing that I looked at:

    https://www.minimalismmadesimple.com/home/wholehearted-living/#:~:text=Wholehearted%20living%20is%20the%20act%20of%20wholeheartedly%20embracing,the%20good%20things%20in%20your%20life%20right%20now.

Notice the word Embrace in the title. I must be meant to learn from it.

What does it mean to live wholeheartedly? I immediately thought of non-resistance (go with the flow), Presence, open heart and open mind…Mindful that what we give in every situation and what we take in every situation matters and should be life-giving.

I thought of the cycle of our breath. It’s giving and taking/taking and giving. We take in nitrogen and oxygen from the air and give back mostly carbon dioxide to feed the plants. They in turn breathe in the carbon dioxide and release the oxygen we need to maintain life. It’s such a profound example of wholeheartedness, healthy giving and taking.

When I did a search in my documents on wholeheartedness I found this definition of it:
“Wholeheartedness is not about doing more; it’s about how you do what you do. Try to bring your full presence to what you do, including resting wholeheartedly when rest is what is truly called for”

And I found this quote from Br. David: “The antidote to exhaustion is not necessarily rest…The antidote to exhaustion is wholeheartedness.” Br. David

To live with acceptance, compassion and gratitude for what is in the present moment. To live with a passion for the planet and all the beauty this home of ours has to offer. To recognize that at times the present moment may be filled with strife, grief or any other sadness. To recognize that sometimes our home will experience the devastation of natural forces, and it will heal itself. Today I am taking time off from irrigating to go with my wife Cheryl to Santa Fe for a Mother’s Day trip. For me that will be living wholeheartedly, celebrating the mother of my children.

Joseph, Your words are inspiring and your appreciation for your wife Cheryl warms my heart…Enjoy your stay in Santa Fe. My sister lives in Las Vegas NM about an hour north of Santa Fe…It’s an interesting and very historic little community. I did some house sitting out there in 2016 and 2017 for some of her parishioners. She is a pastor there. Also, Pecos New Mexico has a restaurant (Frankie’s) which is great and a national park which I enjoyed visiting and learning about the history of the area. If you’re interested, you can check them out on line. Pecos is slightly north of Santa Fe.

Thank you, Carol. We live just north of the Colorado/New Mexico border. We have explored both states and have been all over the Land of Enchantment. There was a very interesting antique store in Las Vegas the last time we were there. Thank you for the reminder to return.
