Love of family and friends. It is a huge. blessing. For the past several days I have been catching up with my cousin who is my age and lives in upstate NY. It has been fun to reflect on similar aspects of our lives, children and parents. Talk about our struggles and just share.

I’m a little late to the party but am so grateful for this question that I read early this morning. Pondering it during my morning prayers and meditations gave me joy. Because the truth is that I do not consider myself someone who takes my blessings for granted. However, I live with chronic illness and for a while I was entirely too focused on the things that I cannot do. But at this age and this stage in my journey I am learning to instead be grateful for what I can do, despite my limitations. And I’ve realized my limitations themselves have in many ways been a blessing.

And so…I guess from this moment forward I will continue to give thanks for the miracle that is my somewhat disabled and aging body knowing that “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” and perfectly ME.

One the individual soul that each living entity has localized and two the supersoul, God’s presence everywhere.

I appreciate the pause to reflect, although my list is things I *already* didn’t take for granted. For starters:
    Being alive and well.
    My sweetheart every day.
    My children’s love.
The natural processes that support life on earth.
The labors of those who provide food, energy, clean water, sanitation systems, everything that makes my life so much easier than if I had to provide all this directly.
Activists and advocates working to make this a better world for everyone.
Coffee. (Which in and of itself is symbolic of so much! I don’t take it for granted–climate change will affect where it grows, how much is available, and what it takes to bring it thousands of miles from coffee-growing lands.)

Dear Pilgrim…….it is afternoon now on this our special prayer Tuesday. I am late here due to a doctor’s appointment this morning. But now that I’m back and had a chance to recover I wanted to return all your wishes for joy, peace and abundant blessings right back to you and your loved ones.

And….Happy Happy 72nd birthday my friend!! May it be a special day and another trip around the sun that is filled with peace and all that is good. 🙏 Namaste friend.

What in my life can I remember to not take for granted from this moment forward?
Many things come to mind but each night when I listened to the weather report on TV and the meteorologist is explaining that the air is not healthy to breathe due to a problem with ozone levels, I think of the planet–of Mother Earth, of climate change.

I do not wish to take the very air I breathe for granted but in many ways I feel helpless. I recycle, I do my best not to waste water, I support climate conscious leadership in my own country in hopes they will succeed in dealing with climate change. All of that said, I think the most important thing I can do is be willing to grow in self awareness. There will be no solution until we as a species take ownership for our thoughts, our feelings and our actions. Everything begins with me and you.

I share an entry below from my 2012 journal that references my life in the 1990’s when I was taking night classes for a degree in pastoral studies.

“I remember sitting in my kitchen in the early 90s studying for a Bible course in my master’s program.  I was reading the lesson and referencing the Bible as I went; suddenly, I was aware of the awesome responsibility we as a species carry.  It literally took my breath away!  I thought, “My God, we have the power to blow ourselves back to amoebas.”

“Jesus was not trying to start a new religion. He was attempting to tell those of his tradition that Yahweh does not play favorites.  There is no Messiah that is going to favor you over your enemies.  All of creation is incarnate (in-fleshed);  all is sacred and interdependent;  when the butterfly wings flap in Japan, the weather is impacted in America; we are creator and we can blow ourselves up or starve ourselves by destroying Mother Earth. Unless we use our ability to reflect (a gift which I don’t think the dinosaurs possessed), unless we make a decision to respond instead of react to life out of fear, unless we learn  to create harmony, we are screwed!  Life on this planet (if there is anything left to support it) will have to start over.”

Life itself! That I am wonderfully made. I am unique and that uniqueness is connected with everyone.

I am human…and take so much for granted. That seems to be the way we (I) are made. But becoming mindful and greeting each day…happy and aware that I have been given the gift of another day is what I need to remember. I am not perfect…I try and try and fail at something that I think is important. Life is about learning…learning about myself–and realizing REALLY who I am. That is what I need to work on and remember. Thank you all!

My Life. I have not always treated myself with loving kindness. Mental health, which for me is about as important as physical health. The love and support of my lovely wife Cheryl. All three I have taken for granted at one time or another.

Each moment of each day. I need to become more aware of how much of it I waste.

So much! For starters, the wonder and majesty of each fresh, new day. The moment-by-moment unfolding mystery of my personal relationship with God. The abundant joy of everything that is about me – the night skies, incredible sunrises, the glorious nature. But too, those heartbeats, exhales and the hope of open hands.
