    Choose kindness! Listen, smile, lend a helping hand. Knowing and remembering everyone carries their own internal and external burdens.

    I am going to make myself readily available to help people today and try to give up lifting compliments to show I appreciate them!

    As I go through the day, this will remind me to be aware of how I can contribute to others’ well-being or happiness. It might be a smile, a helping hand, or just being tolerant of their unkindness. I plan to start by making chicken soup, which will certainly contribute to the three members of our household – husband, me, and dog. Not that the latter ever lacks anything.

      So, I made the chicken soup and that made us all happier and healthier. In a trip to the supermarket, I lifted the spirits of a good friend who recently lost his wife, gave good wishes and healing prayer to another friend who will be undergoing surgery, complimented a little girl on her sunshine-y t-shirt, made a woman smile broadly when I commented on her lovely outfit, and cheered up the cashier who was at the end of a long, tiring day. It doesn’t take a lot if we’re conscious, and it feels so good!
      Another question I suggest we can reflect on: what small action can I take today to improve my well-being?

    I have already been to town and back as I had an early doctor’s appointment…so all my interactions with strangers is finished for the day. My husband and my three animals are the only ones around me…I will do as Joseph suggested and just listen to him when he talks and show patience. I am often so inpatient! Also with my two cats and dog…I will try not to chatter needlessly to them. Thank you one and all for all your wise replies!

    Slow down. Listen. Be present. Bask in the love bestowed on me yesterday. Believe I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. Right now.

    On a practical front, I can tidy up the things I’ve left somewhat messy before being gone for 5 days so my husband doesn’t have to look at my clutter. (Not that he minds much)
    I can plant the tomatillos, peppers and tomatoes I got at the farmers’ market yesterday, which will contribute substantially to their well-being as they root into good, well-watered soil. It’s going to be hot and dry for a while.
    I can put out positive energy as I make my way through the day encountering people whose job it is to handle various transactions (train trip, hotel check-in, dinner) and be a friendly customer, not a crabby customer. In doing that, I can pause to make eye contact and acknowledge them as individual human beings, not a living cash register.

        My mother-in-law use to say, “You need your own car, your own room and a few bucks in your purse!” I remember how shocked I was at the tender age of 18 to hear that. BUT, I found it was good advice!

    I share an entry from my 2014 Journal…
    “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well. ” Julian of Norwich Revelations of Divine Love
    It’s interesting that we call a water source “a well.” Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well if she drank from Jacob’s well she would be thirsty again but that he could offer her “living water.” I interpret that to mean “well-being.” The key word is “well,” but the dualistic “either/or” mind that shames and blames, competes and compares, does not understand the word “well.” The evolutionary mind that was in Christ Jesus is a non-dualistic mind that lets life flow instead of damming (damn-ing) it up, changing it’s course to facilitate a want instead of a need. It goes with the flow, riding on integrity and authenticity, understanding that I am you and you are me. This quote from Fr. Richard Rohr expresses it “WELL.” “Whole people see and create wholeness wherever they go. Split people split up everything and everybody else. By the second half of our lives, we are meant to see in wholes and no longer just in parts.”(Adapted from Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, p. 151) This wholeness refuses to limit life. It has independence but intuitively understands its interdependence. C Conner March 21, 2014

    My first thought about this was to be happier within myself and that would make my husband’s life better. To be happier within myself would be to learn and practice a lot of acceptance of the things that I cannot change.

    God, grant me the serenity
    To accept the things I cannot change;
    Courage to change the things I can;
    and wisdom to know the difference.

    It just so happens I am going to a friend’s house to spend a few nights. She lives alone and at times feels very lonely. We will be contributing to each other’s well-being by laughter and general companionship.

    Tell my kids I love them.
    Smile at strangers when I go out.
    Loving kindness in general.
    For myself, continue being grateful – for this site, my job, my family, for another day.
