I also have great ideas & solutions. Don’t let fear hold me back. 9 Reply Kevin1 year agoKevinWhat are some of my core values? Living my life as a Quaker has and continues to be the most significant. Beyond that, I am more comfortable living my values, not listing them. 5 Reply Howie Geib1 year agoHowie GeibThis is a long answer! And it is personally satisfying that as a senior person I can answer this much easier. Thirty years ago I would NOT have had as easy a time. STABILITY. …I used to hold this as a commitment to a physical place…now it has evolved to literally being grounded and balanced physically, mentally and emotionally. When I get knocked off balance (imagine a skier starting to lose control) recover as quickly as possible. This also transfers well in my rowing…as I have to keep from capsizing. HOSPITALITY. …Welcoming everyone I cross in my day as being sent by God. There are no exceptions. JUSTICE AND PEACE. …In Merton’s Seeds of Contemplation there is a great piece about how peace is not merely the absence of violence. It is the establishment of justice and addressing the needs of the victims of violence (including the deep injuries of the perpetrators). Hard work. Demands compassion that seems impossible much of the time. I cannot do it alone. The front lines against hatred, bigotry, cruelty, jealousy and envy are within myself. OBEDIENCE. …Being on time. Keeping my promises. NOT over promising. Finding the teachers and mentors that are put in front of me and both asking for help and then committing to follow their advise. Mostly all of which pushes me beyond my self-imposed personal limits. PRAYER. …Sending positive energy out in all directions all the time. STEWARDSHIP. …I am a guest. Being a good guest I pitch in when possible, clean up after myself, and assume no property rights so-to-speak. None of this is MINE. COMMUNITY…a sense of duty and obligation to a team, working towards a common objective, deferring personal gratification for the greater good of the whole. (Side note: I have not been in one of our club’s whaleboats since March because of the pandemic, and you would understand why I miss it terribly.) 3 Reply Howie Geib1 year agoHowie GeibI can relate Kevin! I was on my boat all of August and much of July, but now, alas not. My ergometer (rowing machine) is as close as it gets! 2 Reply Don Jones1 year agoDon JonesGenerosity of Spirit, Being of service, Being trustworthy, a man of integrity. 7 Reply Antoinette1 year agoAntoinetteSometimes people get the mistaken notion that spirituality is a separate department of life, the penthouse of existence. DAVID STEINDL-RAST I appreciate BR David’s thoughtful reminder that awareness is so important in our everyday lives. Awareness of what ? Today’s question helps us to put our intentions in our awareness. Mindfulness is always mindful of something and ethical conduct the first value that comes to my mind. “Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.” Lao Tzu Watching the mind is a full time job!
