One thing I am able to do that will make a difference for our planet is to properly pick up after myself & others (if necessary). This means at home recycle and use less plastic/etc, while throwing out my trash in the garbage bags. I have noticed constant practice & change will influence others to join or be curious…therefore I will lead by example. 0 Reply Saq-Kiwi141111 months agoSaq-Kiwi1411simply and slowly start doing the 3Rs. it’s as simple as that. and try to get your neighbors and friends involved. if you can make your little spot green and get friends and neighbors to do the same and encourage them to spread awareness too then it will all add up, eventually 1 Reply TofuLove11 months agoTofuLoveI sort of think I already am doing pretty good on moving towards zero waste … though I live on an island that imports almost all our food so it is a bit challenging. Meh. I think these things are gradual small changes, you implement one or two things get into the habit then change up a few more things and gradually it just becomes your new norm. I guess my point is ... do a few things, don't stress too much about it, then do a few more things and slowly it'll just change to being pretty green....I sort of think I already am doing pretty good on moving towards zero waste … though I live on an island that imports almost all our food so it is a bit challenging. Plus, all of us trying together! 🙂 0 Reply Malag11 months agoMalagBe aware of how much water I use. Water corporations use huge amounts of energy to purify and pump drinking water and handle waste water. 2 Reply Mica11 months agoMicaWalking to the supermarket today, it occurred to me that there’s a fun thing I could do in December. A few months ago, I took a big rubbery yellow star off the path and tied it near the top of a pine tree. In December, I could put strings on colorful leaves and decorate the tree for the holidays. It’s fun to think about the leaves and natural decorations that I might be able to collect. 3 Reply Holly in Ohio11 months agoHolly in OhioThat is cool, Mica. I remember as a kid we had some handmade ornaments of little scenes inside half-walnut shells. I love those natural things so I keep collecting them, planning to do something nice with them one day. Maybe a little Mica would make it better? 😉 1 Reply Mica11 months agoMicaWow, Holly – half walnut shells are small! Some old relative made a holiday ornament in a half egg shell, and it has survived since sometime in the last millennium. Thanks. 1 Reply Don Jones11 months agoDon JonesBe the absolutely, entirely, completely, 100%, all in, zero doubt, no wriggle room, whooshka – nothing but net, out of the ball park best version of myself. Taaa Daaa! 4 Reply KC11 months agoKCWe are choosing a new tenant for our home. If / as we root in kindness for ourselves, prospective tenants and the planet, I pray we are able to offer a gentle experience and a safe, quiet, welcoming home for one person – who will also respect, appreciate our kindness and not take it or us for granted. Affordable housing in our city is scarce and competitive. 4 Reply Holly in Ohio11 months agoHolly in OhioWhen I think for just a moment how much energy and effort is needed to bring food to my plate, and when I know 40% of that food from farm to plate is thrown out, most of it after we have purchased it… gosh!… I will make a greater effort not to waste ANY food. 5 Reply Mica11 months agoMicaDear Holly, I overate, in order to clean my plate at Sunday dinner last weekend, and I got a dreadful case of indigestion. Discussing it with my bro, I wrote: “I think I just need to get rid of my foolish prejudice about cleaning my plate.” My bro replied: “I would say that it is not a foolish prejudice at all, and therefore is not something to be gotten rid of! …” 3 Reply Holly in Ohio11 months agoHolly in OhioI sympathize completely! I was a member of the clean plate club, too! Tonight I could not do it, though, so my sweet potato went back into the fridge. It will make a nice snack, though! 🤗 I have to watch my eyes being bigger than my tummy! 1 Reply Mica11 months agoMicaYes, Holly, as my bro asked me, about Sunday dinner at my son’s house, ‘can you get a doggy bag?’ Cooking just for myself, I tend to eat a ‘course’, not a meal, which seems to work 1 Reply Mary Pat11 months agoMary PatHolly, I know what you mean. I am trying to be more conscious of food waste. In order to do that, I need to think differently. I usually cook for 4 people, even though there are just two of us, so that is one way I can help. I think what if someone comes over? Well, it has never happened so I need to cook for just 2 people tonight, and freeze the rest. Thanks for bringing this up! I have thought about it but never done anything…now, I will give it a try. 5 Reply Holly in Ohio11 months agoHolly in OhioThat makes me excited, Mary Pat. I hope you enjoy exploring that. Lately I have been enjoying digging up old recipes of The Great Depression and WWII. And during WWII, homemade meat substitutes and veggie dinners became popular when rationing came in and shortages (U.K, U.S. and Australia). They were also times when people made use of leftovers and scraps, and they adapted recipes for what they had rather than ran to a store. Most of their ingredients were simple, whole foods. I guess you could say just as with fashion, things come round again!. Tonight I made up a “clean the fridge” casserole. It was tasty, too! There are just two of us in our house, now, too, and a year ago I was cooking for four. It does take getting used to. I keep having to remind myself to go for smaller pots and baking dishes when I’m cooking! Thank you for replying, Mary Pat. It cheers me to see so many people are doing things. It gives me hope! Maybe just do what I do normally but with intention and mindfulness? Care for my garden and don't use pesticides; continue with planting for pollinators and rejoicing when I'm in the garden these days and hear the hum of the bees as they work on what I hope will be a second crop of raspberries; pray; have lunch with a widowed friend; keep my body, mind and spirit as healthy and loving as possible. Just keep on. Just keep on in love and kindness...One of those questions that make me go “Uh….” Maybe just do what I do normally but with intention and mindfulness? That is my goal. It is a new way of thinking for me. Read More7 Reply Holly in Ohio11 months agoHolly in OhioI’m trying to do that, too, Mary Pat. My husband and I have very different metabolisms, and he has a very physical job, so that has made going meatless a challenge, but I am gradually finding ways where he can eat what he wants and needs, and I can eat what I need, too, without it being too much of a hassle! Good luck, Mary Pat. Please let me know how you get on with it! 🙂 4 Reply Butterfly11 months agoButterflyThat’s great, Mary Pat. It’s the way I started nearly 5 years ago. One day at a time as it feels right for you. My diet is completely plant-based now and much more interesting as I try out new recipes. Healthier for us, the planet and the animals! 8 Reply Michael11 months agoMichaelI would encourage as a good place to start is internet search Why Bother Michael Pollan. This is such an immense topic creating feelings of “what I do is insignificant”!! Reading n sharing this article has helped me n others considerably. One thing to encourage is “meat consumption reduction to slow climate disruption”? 6 Reply Butterfly11 months agoButterflyEat vegetable and cereal based food, no animal products. 6 Reply EJP11 months agoEJPJust be kind to all. 4 Reply Kevin11 months agoKevinDrive less. Now there’s an easy and nearly meaningless answer if there ever was one! Sorry, but these kinds of questions just make me dizzy. I think I will check back later and hopefully get schooled by what others share as the day goes along. 4 Reply Michele11 months agoMicheleStop using plastic utensils -use bamboo ones:) 4 Reply 1 2 Next » My Private Gratitude Journal Write an entry in your private gratefulness journal Get Started This site is brought to you by A Network for Grateful Living, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
