In dark times, what stars have appeared to guide my way?

    I’ve had the benefit of having good friends share their experience, strength and hope with me for the past decade. They don’t tell me what to do, they simply share how they’ve handled a situation.

    It seems that whenever the stars are the darkest I pray with the purest 7/10. My stars are my feast and the continuing aspiration God, in life and absolute surrender to the divine presence with patience and love.

    Always such stars have come into my life at the right times. Particular teachers who nurtured creativity and leadership. Grandmothers whose wisdom became a part of my soul. The occasional pilgrim who appeared alongside me for even a short time, walked with me, and believed. Two, in particular, spiritual guides, women ahead of me on the path who held the deep wisdom and were profoundly kind. Many authors – in particular John O’Donohue.

    Friends, family, and at times, the kindness of complete strangers. Sometimes, small glimpses of light are enough to keep you going a little longer.

    My aunt Genie, who when I was 13 and sent away to boarding school upon the disintegration of my childhood home, came to visit me almost every weekend and took me home for an overnight. Gently and very subtly she walked me towards a place where I could begin to discern a future. A future as a strong and independent individual. I will forever be in her debt. Many great writers including novelists Melville and Steinbeck, Spiritual masters Merton and Joanna Macy. Many teachers including Tom Yeomans ...
