In dark times, what stars have appeared to guide my way?

    Please don’t laugh TOO hard but I took this question literally. One of the things in life that brings me joy is sitting outside and looking up at the nighttime sky. And there are a certain handful of constellations that I look for. My favorite has always been Orion. I don’t even know why. It just always has been that way. I remember being very little and finding joy in seeking out Orion, the North Star, the Big Dipper, and others.

    I don’t remember responding to this question. The stars that appear are different to each situation. More than anything, it takes life experience to know you will get through whatever comes our way. That is everything.

    The star that always shines is the one that says you have the resilience to get through this and somehow you’ll grow. I’m grateful that it shows up for me.

    The loving kindness of dear friends who called or came along for cooking together, or walking in nature, or the dear friend who was willing to listen and be there for me when things were getting too dark; music; and oftentimes the people here who share honestly and kind; my dear sister; the underlying Light and Love that did shine through all their tones, words and their caring.

    I have come to like the dark – meaning the absence of light. It is there that a gentle loving knowing emerges pointing a way. It is the stars themselves rest in the darkness, yet shine.

    I have always faced my darkest times by turning to prayer. Growing up without a family taught me to rely exclusively on God in good times and bad. He has been the one Constant of my life, evidenced by the stars in the night sky and the continuous thrum of waves against the shore. He has been my father, my mother, my sibling and my friend.

    Prayer in high anxiety times in the middle of the night, nature walks in the day , my bestfriends voice, and a loving touch from my husband to ease fear.

    Many…. but the response which immediately came to mind was “Poets – especially Mary Oliver … ” I think she can turn me back to the solace of God’s wild and beautiful creation, and help me ground my soul.

      I read Wild Geese at my brother in law’s Celebration of Life Zoom get together on Sunday. It was the perfect thing to share.

    My mom. When I was in some of my darkest times several years ago, she was there in a way that gave me hope in myself. She never told me what to do, but was there lifting me up. She has always been my brightest star and biggest cheerleader.

    The brightest star is Hope. She comes to me when I’m lost & floundering and helps me find the way through confusion & pain. Hope is always lingering in the background; always at the ready when I need her light.
