I recently underwent complex surgery on my foot and now that it is almost summer, I want to be out and moving around and walking with friends and taking long walks in the woods, mowing the yard and working out in the garden, but I have learned through trial and error that less is more with regard to the ability for my foot to heal. So today, I will listen to the gentle messages my foot is sending and will take it easy instead of being impatient & pushing the envelope of healing.

I can show appreciation for my body today by being mindful & honoring it.
Eat nutritious food, think good thoughts, meditate, do some yoga & walk. Be aware when negative β€œcrap” enters my space & make the conscious choice to not partake of it; keep my vibration high. ✨

I’m doing it right now, by eating a
healthy breakfast. I will make time
for stretching and a quick walk, before
    I go to work.
My body has paid the price for a
    lifetime of stress and anxiety.
    My daily meditation and gratitude
practice is equally important for my
    mind/body health.
Thank you for the reminder. πŸ™
Happy Friday everyone! I hope the
warmer weather is coming to all
of you here in the northern hemisphere.
Here in the California wine country, it’s
    quite spectacular.

In the past my body was often the thing I sought to change to conform to some externally created notion of beauty. Over the last two years reading work by Virginia Sole-Smith has given me new eyes with which to recognize the ways I’ve internalized norms that have nothing to do with what my body does for me every day, or what I enjoy. (I’m on the waiting list at my library for her new book Fat Talk and she writes a wonderful column on Substack called Burnt Toast–highly recommend!)

Today I can appreciate what my body did yesterday, since it is informing me in no uncertain terms that my gardening activities involved a lot of movements I don’t make every day. I’ll enjoy the feeling of the sun on my skin and hugs from my younger daughter; they’re leaving today for 2 months in Colombia and I get to have a goodbye dinner and lots of hugs. I’ll feed my body well, which includes treats. I’m going to Seattle for the day and may spend some time walking and paying attention to my body as it moves, for a walking meditation. Tonight I will give my body restful sleep with the cool night air blowing through my window, and perhaps the sound of an owl from the nearby park. I can feel myself relaxing as I type this.

By being present with it. By noticing how it feels when it gets anxious, sad, or stressed, but reminding myself to simply sit with these thoughts and feelings. Acknowledging their presence with love and compassion while being guided towards the next step.

“And I said to my body, softly, β€œI want to be your friend.” It took a long breath. And replied, β€œI have been waiting my whole life for this.” Nayyirah Waheed

I realize that I have not always been my body’s friend but these days I do my best to take a walk daily and do my Physical Therapy exercises. I give thanks daily for how my body has weathered all the demands I have made on it. Maybe it is because I’m in the winter of my life but I believe our bodies to be our greatest gift. After all, without them, where would we live?

Start with coffee and heating pads, followed by yoga. With my history, it is a modified form of yoga that helps my flexibility and balance. Stay with my low fodmap eating plan (restrictions) and get outside as much as possible.

Today’s question intersects well with two aspects of my present moment experience. After a fall last week which resulted in a broken patella, I am learning to live with a knee immobilizer. Gratefully & of necessity, my pace has slowed. Adjusting to my new limits offers me precious time to rest, reflect & honor my body for all it has enabled me to do thus far.

Today also happens to be my 77th birthday. I intend to listen well to my body as she guides me in how to go forward more mindfully. Thanks for honoring my story by reading this reflection. πŸ•Š to each of you today.

Today, I will be more mindful of what I am putting in my body and make this a daily and mindful practice. I will continue to be active in my home; and resting when I need to. Being grateful that I can do the things that I still want to do. I can walk, and bike, and hike and work around our land. I am 71 and thankfully not infirmed. I am grateful.
