Youtube is such a great resource for things like this! I try to listen to others when they are speaking to me. I do my best to give the person my full attention, and that is a gift. And that is another way of giving my time to others. I just found out that my county has a Buy A Bag for Seniors. It is a way to purchase a Bag of fresh produce for our marginal brothers and sisters who fall between the cracks. They make just enough-which is really NOT enough-to not qualify for food stamps or other financial helps…the county seeks donations, and asks for volunteers to help pack the produce and deliver the bags to the elderly. Many do not have transportation. The produce- fresh fruits and vegetables- comes from local grocery stores and Saturday Markets. So I have set up a donation(can’t afford much, but at least something), and am going to volunteer to help pack bags and maybe deliver in the summer and fall months. Others need it, and even a small donation made monthly can help others. I like the idea of several of us making a difference for someone else. When my children were in grade school, every year before Christmas we would get a large box, and fill it with food, mittens, hats, whatever felt like was needed, I let the kids pick out most of the things that went into the box. We knew who needed it because I volunteered at the schools. We would head out, make sure at least one light was on in the house, or apartment windows….. The kids would put the box on the front porch or apartment door, ring the bell and run! They loved it. It was great fun. And they learnt early that you can make a difference in someone’s life, maybe just for a little bit of time, but it mattered…. In a lot of ways I am basically an extrovert to the extreme, I love being out and about with the masses, but I also find I have capacity in terms of more introverted things which means that is what I should do as it helps people. My natural tendencies though are towards extreme extroversion and people orientation though my job mostly is solitary and why sometimes I just have to go out to get my happy chemicals from being around people haha. I feel my current job helps the most people so even if it isn’t maybe my natural tendency in terms of socializing, it’s what I do long hours then every so often venture out for my human fix. When things go badly, hopefully something will still resonate, so they don’t feel as bad. 1 Reply Ose7 months agoOseIn my working place, there is a little box, sending beautiful birdsong when passing by. Everybody loves it, these birds greeting everyone in the morning, especially these days. But yesterday, the wheel where you can regulate the level of volume suddenly was turned too much so that it started to terribly hurt in my ears. Fortunately it was possible to adapt it again, and everyone who entered afterwards was welcomed again by this surprise of beautiful song in winter. 2 Reply Mary Pat7 months agoMary PatAfter reading this, I thought about it, and I went to google and looked up birdsongs. There are several Youtube videos with birdsongs that I am going to listen to and bookmark. It is because I miss that sound first thing in the morning in the fall and winter months. Thank you for jogging my brain! 2 Reply Ose7 months agoOseDear Mary Pat. this beautiful thing is called “Zwitscherbox”, I add a link for you to have a look at, it works as a motion sensor. A bit below the site, you find an example of the birdsong which starts any time you pass by. And really, in winter it is a gift of sorts. 🙂 ww.— zwitscherbox.com/shop/zwitscherbox-wald/ 1 Reply sunnypatti7 months agosunnypattiShare a smile 🙂 Lend an ear 👂 Offer a hug 🤗 3 Reply Heather7 months agoHeatherMy patience and flexibility at school and at home. 2 Reply dcdeb7 months agodcdebMy company, a listening ear. 2 Reply Blossom7 months agoBlossomI have many fond memories doing this; food drives, clothing, money, even under garments and purses stuffed with toiletries. for a woman’s shelter, (prompted a lot of giggles from our group). I think the most appreciated was walking a friends dog and keeping her yard free of pooh for 3 months when she broke a bone. Today it is a smile, a phone call and I love the gift of laugher. Pay it forward, give freely with no attachments of whatever “it” is. 4 Reply Mary Pat7 months agoMary PatOH, Blossom! I have been the recipient of friends walking our dog for us while we were in the throes of Covid and it was the absolute best gift anyone could give us! I didn’t have to worry about it at all, which I think helped my recovery. Thank you for doing this….it, for me, was the best gift I received, and I bet your friend feels much the same….. 1 Reply GregC7 months agoGregCVolunteering my time and donating extra clothes. 3 Reply Linda7 months agoLindaLike several have said here, I have the gift of extra time since retiring. Taking the time to acknowledge and thank the salespeople who check out my groceries and other items when I shop is a fine way to use it. 4 Reply Emmaleah7 months agoEmmaleahI’ve got lots of love to give and I strive to be more open to sharing it with others. Also, one of my passions is teaching children about environmental stewardship and agriculture, which I do sometimes at my current job and I am also working towards building my own non-profit program so that I can make a bigger difference. 2 Reply Nelson7 months agoNelsonI got present to this yesterday. The prospect said that she receives a lot of these solicitations but figured sure, she’ll give me her time. I was gracious and did a needs assessment. After every reply, I said thank you, reiterated what she said to make sure my understanding is correct. Even went as far saying ma’am, and making a joke. (This is through text so I have idea how she reacted.) I ended the conversation with saying how pleasant it was to speak with her, and again, I know her time is valuable. I appreciate how she generous she was with me. Her response dumbfounded to be honest: She said I was the only person who made her feel heard and appreciated. She regained faith that there are genuine people out there. She wished me a blessed evening and she has to go back to work so she can buy Christmas presents…. Morale of the story: I didn’t know what she really needs, but just giving gratitude for her time and company made a difference. I have the screenshot, and I’m still looking at it this morning. It’s a good reminder. Read More4 Reply devy7 months agodevyBeing retired, have lots of free time. I would like to volunteer again, but covid has dampened any plans to do so. Perhaps I can phone people who I know who are going through difficulties and provide a listening ear to those whom want to talk and for those who prefer to selfs problem solve, give them their space to allow them to so. I’m trying not to rescue others.. provide an ear and hand if needed be. 5 Reply Mica7 months agoMicaFree time – thanks, devy – I’m retired, too, so that’s a good answer for me, too. I used to answer Quora questions – maybe it’s time for me to start doing that again. Time has started hanging heavy lately. I appreciate your answer, because my mind was giving me no answer 😊🙃 3 Reply Katrina7 months agoKatrinaSo many wonderful, thoughtful and gracious ideas posted here. And most are true for me. I especially like the idea of time and full attention. I can and do give that. 4 Reply Javier Visionquest7 months agoJavier VisionquestGive blood Build soil 5 Reply sizaah7 months agosizaahWould you mind expanding on this? I’ve never heard this phrase before 3 Reply Javier Visionquest7 months agoJavier VisionquestIt’s not a phrase or a saying, per se. Two years of a global pandemic have critically decreased the availability of blood for emergency transfusions. We don’t think about it until we, or someone we love, needs a blood transfusion. More than a century of conventional farming practices have depleted the soil. Many never consider the source of our food as prices skyrocket and nutritional value of food plummets. 2 Reply EJP7 months agoEJPBy simply sharing my time for all that need it. 5 Reply Patricia7 months agoPatriciaI remember my former spiritual director, retired from her other full-time work, talked about how she now had “the gift of time” – more flexibility to respond to others. I’ve been using my “gift of time” for others in several ways – and hope to continue to be mindful about how I can respond to others in their need. 6 Reply SirPee7 months agoSirPeeThe answer to this is supposed to be straight-cut, yet, very difficult to keep by us humans. I can make a difference with anything I have that others don’t have by simply sharing what I have with those who haven’t. 6 Reply 1 2 Next » My Private Gratitude Journal Write an entry in your private gratefulness journal Get Started This site is brought to you by A Network for Grateful Living, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
