We focus a lot on the written text, but it's harder to take it in when we don't have those words written in our hearts. I think a new goal I can set for myself is to memorize a verse each week from the Vedas, Upanishads, Baghavad Gita, Lotus Sutra, Mahavaga, Tibetan Book of the Dead, Dhammapada, Filial Piety Sutra, Tao te Ching, Zhuangzi, Analects, Mengzi, I Ching, Bible, Nag Hammadi Library, Infancy Gospel of Thomas, Inf...I think one thing we have lost is effort put into memorizing sacred texts. This way, I can not only read the traditions but have them in my heart, so as to absorb them into my being and way of thinking. Read More1 Reply Malag1 year agoMalagThat’s a helpful list to explore! Canadian democracy is sacred to me and requires my engagement as a citizen to preserve it. 3 Reply Ose1 year agoOseTake care of everything as good as I am able to and be there with an open heart. 3 Reply 1 year agoI haven’t learned enough that life is sacred, so I’m sacred, my body, the people I love are sacred, what I have is sacred, the beauties around me – oh so many! So to protect and preserve them, I have to exercise the muscle of meditation, going deeper and deeper into my soul. And respecting what is sacred to others, because I can start bowing to something I had never thought of before. 3 Reply Cailinrua1 year agoCailinruaOnce again (it happens every time), I am so grateful for the posts below. I’m often frozen when I read the question and very little or nothing comes to mind. Your reflections bring about a thaw. I note what moves me or what I tend to resist. My first answer is: my memory of my mother and father and wanting who they were and their spirit to go on living within me. There’s a lot behind that, but it’s enough for today. Thank you. 4 Reply Elizabeth M Jones1 year agoElizabeth M JonesPreserve means to pickle, maintain (something) in its original or existing state.” all records of the past were zealously preserved”. I first have to identify what is sacred to me. What is sacred to me is prayer, reading the Bible and other books that nurture my faith, speaking about my faith, attending Mass, fasting and other sacred rituals. That means that I must do everything in my power to maintain these sacred rituals and traditions. I must keep on doing what I am doing steadfastly. 3 Reply Mark Piper1 year agoMark PiperI like to think I should tend to what is sacred to me, rather than preserve it. The church as a garden more than a museum. I rather see myself preparing the soil, planting, pruning, watering, maybe harvesting that which is sacred. But like gardening fruit I could can it and literally make preservatives out of it. 4 Reply Katrina1 year agoKatrinaLike some others, one of my sacramentals (not to be confused with sacrament, but anything in which I see the Spirit of God, The Holy or experience the grace of God) - is my family. But I know the family will edit those traditions as times change. It’s the values that give meaning to this sacred nature of our family that I pray I am passing on. And that comes in my ability to love and accept all the members of our family, to listen to them, to be a model of unconditional love and grace for all with responsibility, and to shower our family in an environment of fun, laughter, comfort, care, hope, purpose and making a difference in a good way for the world. I realized that without God nothing would be sacred. People, places, & memories may be significant without God, but they miss a dimension that only God brings to them. God infuses life with His Life. His presence raises the significant to the sacred. I know this sounds very abstract, but an example of my marriage helps me to capture the qualitative difference between significant and sacred. My wife ranks as the most significant human relationship in my life. Our relationship changes from significant only to significant and sacred with God’s presence by moving our marriage purpose from “being happy” to being used by Him as an instrument of my wife’s sanctification. God infuses our marriage with a divine purpose beyond our human purpose. To preserve the sacred means first to acknowledge the presence of God in our marriage, and second to accept and surrender to God’s purpose for our marriage. Today, I preserve the sacred in our marriage by selflessly loving my wife so that God’s will may be accomplished in her and through her in others. God infuses all of our lives with divine presence and purpose. To preserve the sacred, we acknowledge God ‘s presence and surrender to His purpose in that relationship or moment. Since God is with us, Immanuel, then all of life is sacred. “being Read More3 Reply Ed Schulte1 year agoEd SchulteWhat is SACRED, ( aka Every human BE-ing! ) IS the SPIRIT-SOUL. I honor that sacredness by fully supporting in all the ways a mother/grandmother of adult children is able – love, listening and hearing as deeply as possible, gathering, laughing, sometimes crying, passing on memories and traditions, paying attention. Mother Nature is sacred to me. I honor this gift in all ways possible for me, love and appreciate, consider my actions. 6 Reply 1 2 Next » My Private Gratitude Journal Write an entry in your private gratefulness journal Get Started This site is brought to you by A Network for Grateful Living, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
