To me appreciating others is learning to accept their strengths and personalities yet also accepting who I am, my personal strengths and talents rather than belittling me. We are all part of the same universe but also unique. I am as important as the other person and learning to accept this and love me who I am. I tend to “compare” a bit too much and should probably just accept more. 5 Reply Howie Geib1 year agoHowie GeibThe outward differences belie our commonality and shared condition. That scratching the surface I find our similarities far outweigh the differences, that therefore become adornment. Like manners of speech or dress, there are customs observed by groups that endear them to me, and yet, do not make them so foreign as to not see myself mirrored in even their most exotic. An amateur birder (VERY amateur) I marvel at the varieties of, say, Egrets, and yet all of them share the gift of flight. We have religions and forms of government and economies which bring distinctions and draw lines not really worth defending if in themselves they harbor defeat. So they bring me up short, these differences, and force me to take notice. Immersed in a faraway land I can feel alienated until, soon, I recognize ourselves. That is what I appreciate, the underlying kinship. Read More9 Reply Michele1 year agoMicheleI like learning about different cultures, trying new foods. I worked with two Cuban friends at a former employer and hearing how bad it is over there was very enlightening and makes you grateful for what I have here in America. I appreciate seeing how hard workers they are. 7 Reply Holly in Ohio1 year agoHolly in OhioI had a Cuban-American housemate for many years, Michele. Gosh, I wish you and I could share a Cuban meal together and talk. That would be very fun! 4 Reply Michele1 year agoMicheleYes! I make a damn good picadillo:) 0 Reply sunnypatti1 year agosunnypattiThere’s a song by Michael Franti that says, “All the freaky people make the beauty of the world.” I appreciate the beauty and individuality from those who are different from me. Inside, we are the same, but outside, we express our own uniqueness, and this is a great gift! I love witnessing it in others. 8 Reply Malag1 year agoMalagThat they are different. Differences balance me out and give me new perspectives. If everyone was like me I’d go off my rocker. I’m carrying me around already! 11 Reply Linda1 year agoLindaI love your perspective! 3 Reply Malag1 year agoMalagThank you Linda 1 Reply Christine1 year agoChristineIt often happens that I see something in another person that I appreciate. I can’t easily name anything for now, but I have carried this quote from Confucius with me for a long time. “When you see a good person, think of becoming like her-him. When you see someone not so good, reflect on your own weak points.” 11 Reply Holly in Ohio1 year agoHolly in OhioNice quote. 🙂 3 Reply Kevin1 year agoKevinI appreciate just about everything about people who are different from me! Truly. Kevin has enough of Kevin, already! 12 Reply Christine1 year agoChristineYou make me smile, Kevin. 6 Reply Kevin1 year agoKevinYou are very kind, Christine!
