Some things I appreciate about people who are different from me are that we are different and can still get along. Whether we differ in race, religion, political beliefs or anything else. I love that even with very strong beliefs we can set those differences aside and still be kind to each other and treat others like they are people too.

The things I appreciate people that are different from me are the learning experience. I also appreciate them choosing me to open up to me to expressing themselves.

There are things that are fascinating about people who are different from me. And sometimes our differences are the source of conflict and tension too. Differences make the world a rich place. And differences can cause tension, conflict and violence too. Let’s not forget that.
People who live lives in cultures different from mine, are endlessly fascinating to me. Or people who are immersed in a profession or life-experience I probably will never have: ballet dancers, professional musicians, shepherds, astronauts…. etc. etc.
Maybe that is why I gravitated to teaching young people who come from cultures and language groups different from my own. They bring a richness and wealth of life experiences to all of us. I think now of my students from Ethiopia, the Sudan, and Japan.

That being said, I am aware that my conflicts with friends and acquaintances come because of our differences in personality and life experiences. Not easy to bridge these gaps!

The more different they are from me (chief of sinners), the more I trust them.

You sin worse than me I would be surprised but we shall not discuss our sins here.

I love all of it: the different language, customs, proverbs, dress, all of it. But most of all the food. Just imagine, without immigration we would all be eating nothing but English food.

People are inspiring due to their being different, and most are in many aspects, in their way of thinking, their perspective, different in so many ways. It presents another facet of how things can be looked at, which usually is quite a gift to get to know, and I feel that I appreciate mostly all of them. Still I must admit that sometimes I have difficulty to open up to new people and this can be an obstacle in the beginning, but it is so less and less, as old habits of behavior due to some kind of former trauma finally are on their way to be let go. So happy and so grateful about all the incredible support offered by kindred hearts like you here as well as other friends dear and close to me. All of you I suppose are different to me and to each other, as I am probably different to all of you, too. If we allow ourselves to be, respectful and with kindness and love, what we experience then is a Cornucopia of possibilities and perspective, no matter if we cook together and each one participates with what he/she loves best or if it is in a discussion or any capability offered for the well being of all concerned.

Sometimes it’s immediately a sense of enrichment. Sometimes its a challenge but I always try to see the person not judge the person. There can be deep disagreement but I’ve learned that with most folks agreeing to disagree is OK. That, then, gives us the freedom to be who we are and lift each other up.

My first reaction to this question, before reading other reactions , is I appreciate the same qualities, the same kindness, experiences, and challenges as I do in myself or the groups I typically associate with.

What a strange question. Isn’t everyone different than me? I know on one level, as humans here on earth, we are all kind of the same, with some
slight variations. On another level, a human to human level, we are all unique. Just answering this question makes my head want to explode. 😁
I guess the main thing I appreciate, is other peoples prospective. Another way to see the same thing or problem. I also love the way we all have unique experiences. Even our siblings had a different experience in the same family. And really, everything else about everyone on this magical planet.

Thank you for this reply, Charlie. That was my first thought too–everyone is different, just like everyone else! (to paraphrase a line from The Incredibles)

The change of perspective among others from different cultures helps me to understand a bit better of their joys and concerns while navigating the present. As the old saying goes “There is more than one way to skin a cat.”
